From My Mental Health Toolkit—Linda Dini Jenkins Goes Classical

From My Mental Health Toolkit — Linda Dini Jenkins Goes Classical

I love Rock n’ Roll. I grew up on it. Elvis. Buddy Holly. Richie Valens. Patsy Cline. Chuck Berry. All those amazing girl groups. They followed me from elementary school through college, with lots of new sounds along the way. But when I really need to relax, I go full classical. A lapsed violinist, I played many of the greatest hits in school orchestras: Mozart, Hayden, Handel. But it was my friend Bill Holland — madman bassoonist, cellist, violist, all-round brilliant musician — who introduced me to music that was a little more obscure but just as challenging and moving. One of the pieces he made me listen to has been my go-to I need a break” music for decades. It’s the Tallis Fantasia,” or more formally, Fantasia on a Theme” by Thomas Tallis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqxcxTbiKEs). Tallis wrote his theme in the 16th century; Williams turned it into this masterpiece in 1910, as a commission from the Three Choirs Festival, to be performed at Gloucester Cathedral. It works every time. I lie down, close my eyes, and turn the volume way up. I am surrounded by cellos. Get the instrumental version, so your head isn’t trying to figure out the words. It’s the notes that matter, that resonate to your core, telling you that everything will be all right.
