Cardboard represents the ordinary: as an artist my purpose is to have a perspective on that – to paraphrase Italo Calvino; the artists job is to be an unconventional observer of the ordinary. It’s that perspective that inspires me. The thing with cardboard is that it has history. It’s been somewhere else. Also: it’s a cheap material that gives you permission to fail … and in that failure is opportunity. It allows for error, spontaneity.
A collage contains an intrinsic perception of value. It’s a perception. There is wonder in the little stuff. I love being able to bring focus to everyday things. And like cardboard it has has history before it meets you. It’s a second chance at color, line and shape that is hopefully pleasing to the eye, mind and heart.
